How to Measure Necklace Length Before Buying a Gift

Sep 13, 2026

A necklace can be the right style and still land in the wrong place. Before choosing a length, start with something more useful than an illustration: a necklace the wearer already enjoys, or a measured piece of string she can try on.

The quick answer: measure the full wearable chain from end to end, record the extender separately, then check where the pendant will fall. A chain measurement is not the same as the distance from the neck to the bottom of a charm.

This guide gives you a repeatable measurement method and a gift-fit worksheet. For rounded versus elongated links, use our separate Rolo vs. Paperclip chain guide.

Measure a necklace

Choose a necklace that fits the way the wearer wants the new one to fit. An occasional long pendant is not a useful reference for a close-fitting everyday necklace.

  1. Open the clasp and lay the necklace straight beside a ruler or tape. Smooth out bends without pulling the links tight.
  2. Measure from the outer end of the clasp to the connection point used at the other end. Record the unit: inches or centimeters.
  3. If there is an extender, record the shortest wearable length and the longest wearable length separately. Do not count the extender twice.
  4. Measure the pendant separately, from its attachment point to its bottom. Record this as the pendant drop, not additional chain length.
  5. Note which extender link she actually uses. The maximum advertised length may not be her preferred setting.

The result should read like a useful product description: “Chain worn at 50 cm; extender allows up to 54 cm; pendant drop measured separately.” Not simply “medium necklace.”

If you are measuring a necklace she already owns, ask before borrowing it. A surprise is not worth risking a favorite piece or making assumptions about something sentimental.

Preview its position

Cut a soft piece of string or ribbon to the proposed chain length. Drape it loosely around the neck while standing in front of a mirror. Do not tie it tightly. Compare the result with the neckline she expects to wear.

For an adjustable necklace, repeat the preview at both endpoints and record the setting she prefers. A small paper shape can help visualize the pendant’s dimensions. It is only a placement aid: it cannot reproduce the weight, movement, or feel of the finished jewelry. String also behaves differently from metal links. Use the exercise to compare options, not to promise a perfect fit.

Convert inches and centimeters

An inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters. Multiply inches by 2.54 to obtain centimeters; divide centimeters by 2.54 to obtain inches. Keep the original measurement in your notes and round only the converted display value.

Recorded measurement Calculation Rounded display
50 cm chain 50 ÷ 2.54 19.7 inches
4 cm extender 4 ÷ 2.54 1.6 inches
54 cm combined maximum 54 ÷ 2.54 21.3 inches

These are worked conversion examples, not a chart of guaranteed body positions. Our Size & Fit Guide lists the current DIVETIA necklace range. For choosing between chain styles and conventional lengths, return to the chain guide.

Catch three common measurement mistakes

Measuring a necklace while it is closed. The distance across a doubled necklace is not its full wearable length. Open it and measure the complete chain using the chosen attachment point. Do not use a doubled measurement unless you can account for the clasp and the way the chain is arranged.

Adding the extender twice. A retailer may list a base length plus an extender, or a total that already includes it. Write down which convention the listing uses. If that is unclear, ask before comparing numbers.

Comparing the chain with the bottom of the pendant. One number follows the chain around the neck; the other describes the pendant’s separate drop. Label both. Adding them into a single “necklace size” can hide why two pieces with equal chains look different.

The last row matters as much as the first. A photograph may show a styled combination. Confirm whether the item includes the chain, the charm, or both. Our charm-only versus complete-necklace guide explains that distinction.

If you cannot measure anything

Do not infer a necklace size from a clothing size, height, or a photograph alone. Ask which necklace length she likes, invite her to choose between two options, or choose together after giving a thoughtful note. An extender offers adjustment within its stated range; it does not make a necklace one-size-fits-all.

Before ordering a surprise, read the seller’s current return conditions. A return window is not a substitute for checking fit, and personalized or worn items may have different terms.

Questions, answered

Does necklace length include the clasp?

For this measurement method, include the clasp and measure to the connection point used at the other end. Retailers may describe measurements differently, so confirm how a product’s stated length was measured when precision matters.

Is a 50 cm necklace the same as a 20-inch necklace?

Not exactly. Fifty centimeters is approximately 19.7 inches; 20 inches is 50.8 cm. The difference is 0.8 cm. Compare actual specifications rather than treating rounded labels as identical.

Do I add the pendant to the chain measurement?

No. Record chain length and pendant drop separately. A pendant changes the necklace’s visual endpoint, but it does not change the chain’s end-to-end length.

Will a 4 cm extender move the pendant 4 cm lower?

Do not assume that. An extender adds to the total chain length around the neck. How far the pendant moves vertically depends on how the chain sits and the wearer’s shape. Preview the actual range.

Can this worksheet tell me whether a charm will fit the chain?

No. Length and hardware compatibility are separate checks. The charm’s connector must work with the chain’s intended attachment point. See how openable charms work before combining pieces.
