From Raw Silver to Finished Charm: The Reveal

There's a moment in the jewelry-making process that nobody talks about.
It happens after the silver has been poured and has cooled. After the flask has been quenched in water. After the investment mold — that dense, plaster-like casing — has crumbled away.
It's the first time the cast sprue tree appears in full. Silver instead of resin. Solid instead of fragile. Real.

This post picks up right where that one left off: the pour is done, the silver has set, and now comes the reveal.
Breaking the Mold
When the casting machine stops spinning and the flask cools enough to handle, it goes into water. The investment — the gypsum-based material that held the negative shape of the mold — is brittle once fired. The quench does most of the work: the steam and shock cause it to crack and fall away in chunks.
What's left is the sprue tree. Same shape it was as a resin pattern tree, but now solid sterling silver.
It doesn't look precious yet. Fresh out of the investment, cast silver is matte and slightly rough — there's a thin oxide layer on the surface, and the investment leaves a fine residue in the recesses. The tree gets cleaned: first in an ultrasonic bath to shake loose any remaining investment material, then in a chemical pickle solution to dissolve the oxide layer and restore the clean silver surface beneath.
And then you can really see it.
Reading the Tree

Before anything is cut, the tree gets a close look. You can see a lot at this stage — whether the silver filled cleanly, whether the fine details came through, whether anything looks off. It's easier to spot issues here than after pieces are separated.
For a charm like the Blossom — with its distinct petals and central stone seat — that first look at the cast silver matters. The design either translated from digital to metal, or it didn't.
The Cut: Each Piece Becomes Its Own

Each charm is cut from the tree with precision snips — a clean cut at the sprue connection point. It's a small gesture that marks a significant transition: up to this point, the piece has existed as part of a system. Part of a design file. Part of a printed pattern. Part of a cast tree. Now, for the first time, it exists as an individual object.
The cut leaves a small nub of silver where the sprue connected — rough, uneven, a reminder of where it came from. That nub will be removed in finishing: filed flush, sanded smooth, polished to match the rest of the surface. But that's a later stage.
For now, this is raw cast silver. You can see the design clearly — the Flutter butterfly's wings, the Paw Promise paw print, the Bound charm's interlocked geometry — but it's unpolished, unfinished, pre-stone. It looks close. It's not there yet.
The First Look
There's something genuinely exciting about the first examination of a freshly cut piece. You've seen the CAD model. You've seen the resin pattern. You've watched the silver pour. But this — holding the cast silver charm in your hand for the first time — is the first confirmation that the design actually works in metal.
The proportions are right or they're not. The details read or they don't. The form feels right in the hand or it doesn't.
Most of the time, for DIVETIA pieces, the answer is yes to all three. That's a function of the care that goes into the design and the casting. But this moment still matters. It's where any design issues that survived the digital stage become visible for the first time in a material that costs money and can't be undone.
The pieces that pass this inspection move to finishing. Everything that happens from here — the filing, the polishing, the stone setting — is refinement. The fundamental form was established in the kiln.
A Note on the Silver
All DIVETIA charms and pendants are cast in sterling silver — 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper alloy.
